Why Olive Oil Awards Matter—For Us and For You
We have exciting news to share!
Last week, Luretík oils earned top honors at the California State Fair Olive Oil Competition — the premier showcase for California olive oil producers. We came away with 7 awards in total: two Gold Medals, one Double Gold Medal, two Best in Class, and two Best in California designations.
The results far surpassed our own expectations. And this follows two other key moments of recognition: two Gold Medals at the prestigious Los Angeles International Extra Virgin Competition in February, and top honors at the highly selective Good Food Awards, also announced last week. We are deeply grateful for all of it.
But these awards are not simply accolades to celebrate. They are also meaningful tools for you, our customers — a way to make confident, informed choices about the oils you bring into your kitchen. So what do they actually signify, and why should they matter to you? … Allow me to explain.
A Mark of Purity and Quality
I often talk about the importance of healthy olives as the first step in producing a high-quality oil, and the miller’s skill as the final one. As a small producer, we have complete oversight of our process, from grove to bottle; traceability that ensures consistency, transparency, and care at every step. When you choose an award-winning oil from Luretík, you’re not just buying quality—you’re buying a commitment to doing things the right way.
Award-winning olive oils must pass rigorous sensory and chemical evaluations. Renowned competitions bring together trained and experienced panels that include certified tasters, chefs, and olive oil experts who evaluate oils blindly. They assess aroma, flavor complexity, harmony, and overall excellence. When an oil earns top honors, it’s because it has stood out among hundreds of entries either regionally or from around the world. In an industry where labeling can be confusing if not misleading, awards serve as a trusted indicator that what’s in the bottle is pure extra virgin olive oil at its very best.
Understanding Flavor Profiles: Delicate, Medium, Robust
You may notice that many competitions categorize olive oils by intensity: Delicate, Medium, and Robust. These categories describe the oil’s flavor profile, particularly its fruitiness, bitterness, and peppery finish. While much of an oil’s character is pre-determined by its DNA, other factors play a large part in the overall profile of the oil. Harvest timing, healthy fruit, milling techniques, and climate change all influence the final product in any given year so that oils are rarely identical to those produced the previous year.
Delicate oils are smooth and subtle, with mild fruitiness and little bitterness or spice. They’re perfect for dishes where you don’t want to overpower other flavors—think fish, fresh cheeses, or light salads.
Medium oils offer a balanced profile, with noticeable fruitiness and a gentle peppery kick. These are versatile, everyday oils that work beautifully across a wide range of dishes.
Robust oils are bold and expressive, with pronounced bitterness and a peppery finish. They shine when paired with hearty foods like grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or drizzled over soups and legumes.

In the Kitchen
Understanding these categories can help you choose an oil that complements your cooking style and enhances your meals. High-quality olive oil isn’t just an ingredient—it’s a finishing touch that can transform a dish. Drizzle a robust oil over grilled vegetables, a medium oil over pasta, or a delicate oil over fresh burrata, and you’ll immediately taste the difference. Award-winning oils bring vibrancy, aroma, and depth to your food. They add complexity and elevate even the simplest dishes, turning everyday meals into something memorable.

Supporting Craftsmanship
Olive oil at this level is a craft product. It requires careful farming, precise timing, and skilled milling to preserve the unique characteristics of each harvest. Awards recognize that dedication. By choosing these oils, you’re supporting artisans who prioritize quality over quantity and who are passionate about their work.
So when you see an award on a bottle, it’s more than just a badge – it’s a mark of distinction that tells you the oil has been carefully crafted, expertly evaluated, and recognized for its excellence.
For us, these awards reflect our commitment to quality. For you, our customers, they’re a guide, helping you to choose an olive oil that you can trust, enjoy, and feel good about using in your kitchen. We’re proud to share these honors with you, and even more excited for you to experience the differences they represent.
